Some Energy Saving Ideas

Our Las Vegas climate is one where living in an energy efficient home is important but it is also important to try and find ways to keep energy costs down. You can save energy and money by trying to change some of your daily habits.

Here are some helpful suggestions:

  1. Do a nightly energy sweep. We’ve all left fans, electronics or appliances on at night while we sleep, but doing so wastes increasingly expensive energy. To save money, do a nightly sweep through the house to make sure all your electric devices are turned off before you go to bed. It may be a pain, but the savings from simply turning everything off can add up quickly.
  2. Make sure to change your filters. Waiting a long time to change your filters makes your system less efficient and costs you more in electricity. Dirt and neglect can even cause damage to your air conditioner (HVAC) unit.
  3. Check your vents. If they’re closed, open them! Closing vents will actually raise your energy costs.
  4. Use your washer and dryer wisely. Wash your clothes in cold water. Make sure you have full loads of laundry before using the washer and dryer.
  5. Consider your light bulbs. Turn off lights you aren’t using and consider changing bulbs out to compact fluorescents for cost savings.
  6. Be cool. Actually program the programmable thermostat! Find a comfortable temperature for when you are home and when you are not home or asleep. Adjust the temperatures to a higher or lower temperature depending on the season.
  7. Soften those rays. Closing the curtains and lowering the blinds on the sunny side of your house will help keep you cooler on hot days.

Benefits of a Gas Cooktop

Every new American West home comes with a gas cooktop. Why do we choose gas cooktops for our new homes? What are the benefits of a gas cooktop?

Benefits of a gas cooktop:

Accurate Cooking Temperatures

With a gas cooktop, the heat to the cookware transfers immediately because a gas flame immediately grows larger or smaller with a turn of a dial. With an electric range, the burner has to heat up or cool down.

Evenly Distributed Heat

The flame of a gas cooktop is centralized and allows for even distribution of heat to the cookware, which reduces scorching.

Lower Heat Emissions

Gas cooktops emit less wasted heat than electric cooktops. The gas flame and heat also immediately disappears when turned off which makes them safer. With an electric cooktop, you have to wait for that burner to heat up and cool down.

Faster Cooking Time

Gas heat is immediately available. Turn it on and the flame is ready to use, so it takes less time to cook. You can also adjust temperature moment to moment.

No power? No Problem.

In the event that your electricity goes out, you can still prepare a meal with your gas cooktop.

Saves Money

A gas cooktop will lower your electrical bill. Rates for natural gas tend to be lower than the rates for electricity which saves you money.

Chefs Choose Gas Cooktops

Professional chefs love to cook with gas because they provide greater heat control than electric cooktops. Gas ovens also retain moisture in foods more consistently than their electric counterparts.

Benefits of Protective House Wrap in Your American West Home

Every new American West home includes so many eHome features which allows your new home to be an energy saver home. One of these fantastic features is Protective House Wrap. What is Protective House Wrap and what are the benefits of it?

The forces of nature affect everything. A new home should not be built without giving it protection against air and moisture infiltration. Protective House Wrap blocks air transfer through the framed wall, allows airborne moisture vapor to escape without condensing in wall cavities and sheds water that could otherwise get behind the exterior finish.

BENEFITS OF PROTECTIVE HOUSE WRAP:

  • Protection against air and moisture infiltration
  • Improves Energy Efficiency
  • Improves Indoor Air Quality
  • Prevents Moisture Damage
  • High UV Resistance

American West is focused on building energy-efficient homes with sustainable materials and features that matter to you and your family. Our eHome features allow us to reduce our carbon footprint and more importantly to help our homeowners save money.
