Employees

Management

At 71 years old, Larry Canarelli intends to keep building homes as long as he lives. As he sees it, a passion “has no finish line,” and there is no doubt that Larry has a passion for building homes.

Larry started from the bottom of the economic strata. Born in the rural community of Roseburg, Oregon, in the late 1940s, Larry spent his childhood in poverty. During his early childhood, Larry and his family lived in riverside tents and small shacks, often with no running water or bathroom facilities. At 5 years old, Larry’s father abandoned his family, leaving his mother to care for four children on her own. Larry was voluntarily placed into an orphanage and only later reunited with his mother and siblings. His mother remarried and Larry, his parents and four sisters moved into a small one-bedroom home in Central California.

Even at the young age of 9 years old, Larry had a keen eye for real estate. While perusing the local newspaper which he delivered around town, Larry found the home his family would ultimately purchase – it was a 900 sq. ft. home with three bedrooms and one bath. It would be his home for the remainder of his childhood.

Always a hard-worker and highly intelligent, Larry was accepted to UCLA and worked his way through college and later through the Master’s Degree graduate program at USC. He specialized in marketing and was good with numbers.

As a graduate student, Larry had the opportunity to work with President Nixon’s commission for the redevelopment of the inner cities of the U.S. Not only did this experience pique his interest in residential homebuilding, it gave him the experience he needed to secure his first job in the industry – a marketing position with Metropolitan Homes in Southern California. He quickly rose up the ladder at Metropolitan and, by the late 1970s, he was the Executive Vice President in charge of architectural design and marketing. In 1981, he became the President of the Las Vegas division and he and his family became full-time Las Vegas residents. Larry was responsible for all operations, including land acquisitions.

In 1984, Larry used his expertise and experience in the Las Vegas housing market and launched his own company – American West Homes. The struggles Larry’s family endured in his early years instilled in him an understanding of the value and importance of a family home – a place one can call their own. As Larry states, he was ingrained with “a belief in what people could have and should have.” That understanding grew into a passion to help provide families with a good quality, affordable home, large enough to accommodate them. He has brought this passion into American West Homes. While Larry has been very successful as a homebuilder and industry innovator, it was never about the money. Larry equates himself as the Johnny Appleseed of homes as he builds quality homes across the country, “I build homes for the satisfaction of the homeowner, not how much we could pro t from it. It has always been about how many people’s lives you could affect.”

Industry Changes

Larry Canarelli and American West Homes have seen their share of industry changes over the past 40 years. Through strategic land purchases, intelligent marketing, innovative designs excellence in customer service and good, old-fashioned hard work, American West has weathered many industry storms and established itself as the Valley’s leading homebuilder. Today, Las Vegas is a national leader with home prices jumping 9% over the past year. The Canarelli family and American West are large supporters of many philanthropic endeavors. Larry and his wife, Heidi, have been fixtures in the Las Vegas community since the late 1970s and have always believed strongly in giving back to the community and have contributed much of their time and support to the children of Las Vegas. They are large supporters of Opportunity Village, Assistance League of Las Vegas, Las Vegas Junior League and Operation School Bell. They have happily coached youth soccer and baseball teams and have donated significantly to various schools throughout the Valley, providing funds for computer labs and band uniforms, building athletic fields, providing scholarships, and much, much more. Their contributions and commitment to this city have been unparalleled. In recognition of their longtime dedication to public education, the CCSD named the Lawrence and Heidi Canarelli Middle School, located in Coronado Ranch, in their honor.

BBB Involvement

American West Homes is honored to be an Accredited Member of the BBB of Southern Nevada and appreciates the extra value it brings to the company and the community in general. As Larry explains, “The local office of the BBB is genuinely concerned for the well-being of our business community to the end that our citizenry are comfortable doing business with a BBB-sanctioned company. We are very proud of our BBB rating and know that it is earned, not given. That is important.”

Meet Kelly Hughes, American West’s Online Sales Counselor!

While American West homes can speak volumes on their own, we also have a dynamic team that makes our company really stand out. One of those team members is our new Online Sales Counselor, Kelly Hughes. When future homeowners begin their new home search on the web, Kelly is their first point of contact. She is an incredible resource for anyone who may be ready to start the process but isn’t sure how to do it.

What is your role at American West Homes?

As the Online Sales Counselor for American West, I am here to assist our future homeowners in identifying which communities and floorplans will best suit their needs. I can introduce them to all that American West has to offer, help get them qualified, and make sure that their new home buying experience is not only easy, but enjoyable from start to finish.

What is your favorite part about working with new home buyers?

Working in new home development is by far the most rewarding facet of my real estate career, not only because I get to help people find their perfect new homes, but because I have the chance to really get to know my buyers and their families throughout the buying and building process. I am in the unique position of getting to welcome families into their new American West homes, while also welcoming many of them into the Las Vegas community as a whole. I love seeing our American West homeowners around town… we really are like one big family!

What advice do you have for prospective home buyers?

Buying a new home is a big investment in your future, so of course it can feel intimidating. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be! This is where I come in handy as an Online Sales Counselor. I am here to answer any questions that prospective home buyers may have, whether they’re looking for the first time or are experienced buyers.

What’s your favorite part of the home buying process?

I really love the excitement that comes with each step of the process. American West is a unique company because our New Home Specialists are involved in the process from start to finish. We get to know the buyers, we get a sense of what they need in a new home, and we get to experience their excitement when they fall in the love with the perfect floorplan. Then, the fun part is getting to help them choose all of their interior selections, and give their new home a look and feel that is truly unique to them. All of that being said, I don’t know if anything beats the feeling of getting to give a new homeowner their keys for the first time!

What would people be surprised to know about you?

That I am a real – and rare – Las Vegas local. I was born and raised in the Las Vegas Valley. And not only do I work for this amazing company, but I have experienced the American West difference for myself. I spent my childhood growing up in an American West home. So, when I talk to prospective home buyers, I am truly speaking from experience!

What three words best describe you?

I would say compassionate, confident, and sincere. I understand the emotional experience that goes into buying a new home, and I have compassion for every new homeowner that I have the pleasure of working with. I see every prospective home buyer as a real person, a future neighbor or even a friend, not just a customer. I am confident in my ability to help families improve their lives, and in the quality of the product that I represent. Finally, I am a sincere person. I live true to myself, my friends and family, and I bring that same sense of honestly and reliability to my professional relationships as well. I am always going to be upfront with my home buyers because I genuinely want to use my expertise to help better their lives and our community.

What do you like to do on your days off?

On my days off, I like to enjoy all of the entertainment options that are unique to Las Vegas! It doesn’t matter the day, there is always something fun to do here. I love to spend time outdoors, either hiking at Red Rock or spending a day at Lake Mead. Of course, I love to take advantage of local specials and discounts! I try to check out as many live performances as I can because we are home to some of the most talented entertainers in the world. Last, but definitely not least, I love to go to all of the Vegas Golden Knights games at the gorgeous new T-Mobile Arena. Go Knights!

What’s at the top of your bucket list?

Well, being the avid sports fan that I am, my dream would be to see a professional sports team win a championship for Las Vegas! Whether its hockey, football, or maybe even a future basketball franchise, I want to be there when Las Vegas wins big!

Why Did This Family Choose Silverado Summit?

Las Vegas native Tracy Covert and her family have the distinction of being the first buyers at Silverado Summit. They were already satisfied American West homeowners, so when the time came to look for a larger home, choosing to build a new American West home in Silverado Summit wasn’t a big leap. “We looked at many different houses on the market, both resale and new. We were already familiar with American West and the quality of their homes, because we currently live in one. Silverado Summit fit our family’s needs best.”

In fact, Tracy and other members of her extended family already live in other phases of Silverado Ranch. Tracy’s immediate family has lived in the neighborhood for three years, so they know it and like it. “Our primary focus when choosing a new home was keeping the kids in their current schools while finding a plan large enough to accommodate our family of six comfortably. Silverado Summit is still in the same area we currently reside in so the kids didn’t have to change schools.”

Tracy and her family loved the distinctive plans American West is offering at Silverado Summit. “We’ve seen so many floorplans, and few stand out these days. But this one was unique in that it had three levels, which provided my mother, who lives with us, her own private space on the lower level to enjoy. We love the open layout. And the kitchen is stunning. The other feature that really stood out was the front deck, which will be nice to sit on while the kids play outside.”

When asked what she liked best about American West, Tracy replied, “The buying process is fun! I have really enjoyed the experience. Todd White has been a pleasure to work with, and has kept us informed along the way. We are so excited and could not be more thrilled to be in our new home!”

Tracy and her family chose The Riley home which measures 3,990 square feet. They could not be happier with their choice and have loved the new memories they have already created and look forward to a lifetime more of them. We are thrilled that Tracy and her family chose us to be the builder of their new home.

 

How To Make Your New House Feel Like “Home”

Moving is stressful, whether it’s around the corner or across the country. Getting settled in and making your new house feel like home is always a priority. No matter how quickly you start the process, though, it takes a while for the new space to feel like it’s yours. Here are some tips for making things feel like “home” a little more quickly.

Sort out the closets and dressers first. Not being able to find your fleecy PJs or a favorite sweater, much less underwear, socks and shoes, will only make things rougher in the morning.

Stick to your routines. Especially if you have kids. If possible, set things up like they were in your old house – coat and/or key hooks, the cereal station, laundry baskets. Keep to bedtimes, and any other routines – like Sunday pancakes or nightly walks.

Make it smell like home. Scent is our strongest sense. It immediately transports us – and can be instantly comforting. So, if your old house smelled like bread, start baking! Or if you have a favorite scented candle, light it up. At the very least, buy some fresh cut flowers. Never underestimate the effect of freesia, lavender or lilies.

Make it sound like home. Your favorite tunes wafting through your new halls will also help make the space feel more familiar. And putting area rugs down on the floor will help kill the hollowness you might be experiencing. Open the windows so you can hear the sounds of your new neighborhood.

Fix up the kid’ rooms before you do the rest of the house. They’re going to be feeling out of sorts, so letting them unpack and set up their rooms will make them feel happier and more secure. Plus, you’ll have a safe place for them to hang while you’re trying to sort everything else out.

Don’t forget the outside! It may seem nuts when you have a million other things to do, but you’ll see. Hang a wreath on the door, plant some flowers in a pot on the porch, set up the patio furniture. You’ll feel more welcome when you come home, and your neighbors will see that you care about your home’s “face”.
